ABOUT US
Biophysics is an interdisciplinary science that studies vitality functions using physical methods. Mersin University Faculty of Medicine Department of Biophysics was established in 1998. The department conducts undergraduate medical physics and biophysics courses for term I and term II students of the medical faculty, biophysics for term II students of dentistry faculty and physics for term I students of faculty of pharmacy. Our department started its master's degree program in 2000 and its PHD program in 2002, under the Mersin University Health Sciences Institute. Many students have graduated from these programs. Prof. Dr. Nurten ERDAL, who made valuable contributions to the Department of Biophysics for 25 years, retired in January 2025.
In research and student laboratories; electrocardiography, electroencephalography, electrooculography records can be taken from experimental animals and humans with the electrobiophysics recording station, nerve and muscle action potentials can be recorded using intracellular and extracellular recording techniques, and ion channel currents with the patch-clamp system. By using the magnetic field setup effects of electromagnetic fields and therapeutic effects of pulsed magnetic fields are investigated. Hemodynamic parameters can be determined with the bioimpedance system. The biomechanics of hard and soft tissues are investigated with the biomechanical devices. Numerous interdisciplinary research has been conducted in the department and continues to be conducted.
