1. ESTABLISHMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

In 2006, the "Sexual Health and Reproductive Health (SH/RH) Pre-Graduate Education Strengthening Project" under the Turkey Reproductive Health Program was initiated in collaboration with the Turkish Ministry of Health and the European Union, involving the participation of Erciyes, Istanbul, and Mersin University Faculties of Medicine. Within the scope of the project, nine faculty members representing the Internal, Surgical, and Basic Medical Departments of our faculty were selected to receive training in "Capacity Building in Education" and "Curriculum Development" at Istanbul University and Ankara University. These faculty members established the Medical Education Unit at our faculty on March 8, 2006.

The Medical Education Unit was restructured as the Department of Medical Education under the Department of Basic Medical Sciences on August 13, 2008. The purpose of the establishment was defined as enhancing the quality of education and training at the Faculty of Medicine, continuing the training of trainers, and providing all necessary contributions required by the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine in curriculum development.

Some of the faculty members of the Department of Medical Education were also members of the Undergraduate Education Coordinators Committee, which accelerated the evaluation and development of the education program. On September 9, 2008, Prof. Dr. Murat Ünal was appointed as the first acting Head of the Department of Medical Education. Currently, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim BAŞHAN is serving as the Head of the Department.

On February 17, 2012, Specialist Hüseyin Selvi was appointed as a measurement and evaluation specialist, and on February 25, 2013, Asst. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Başhan was appointed as the first faculty member of the Department of Medical Education.

3. AREAS OF ACTIVITY

1. Takes responsibility for developing and implementing a qualified pre-graduate medical education curriculum that is in line with national and international standards and meets students' needs.
2. Makes recommendations in line with national and international standards to improve the quality of post-graduate medical education.
3. Strives to ensure the lifelong learning, professional competence, and continuous development of medical school graduates.
4. Provides training support for the development of educational skills and methods.
5. Conducts research on educational techniques and methodologies, evaluates the effectiveness of existing programs, and suggests new approaches to improve the quality of medical education.
6. Uses up-to-date measurement and evaluation methods to identify the development areas of internal stakeholders involved in education and assist in their professional development.
7. Takes responsibility for evaluating the education program.
8. Works to ensure that all aspects of medical education, including curriculum, up-to-date teaching, measurement, and evaluation methods, adhere to best practices and achieve high-quality standards.

1. Master's Degree Program

Our department’s master’s program was launched in September 2022 under the Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. The primary aim of the program is to equip master's students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for medical education and to train competent medical educators. The table below lists the master's students accepted into the program.

• One of our master's students, Specialist Doctor Hülya GÜÇ, was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Education at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Medicine.

c. TEXTBOOK

The textbooks began being used in the Spring Term of the 2023-2024 academic year.

5. INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT FACILITIES

The department has four faculty offices, 14 skill laboratories for KUG courses, and one clinical simulator room.
