A Meaningful Contribution to Breast Cancer Awareness from Mersin University

In collaboration with the Mersin University School of Nursing, the Institute of Health Sciences, and ÖHDER (Student Nurses Association), an awareness event was held on Saturday, October 24, at SAYAPARK Mall to highlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer and to raise public awareness.
During the event, attendees were informed about breast cancer, its risk factors, prevention methods, and the importance of early detection. Participants were guided through a hands-on demonstration of self-breast exams using a breast model to help them become more informed about breast health. Additionally, participants were given pink ribbons—the symbol of breast cancer awareness—to highlight the need for increased public sensitivity regarding early detection.
Prof. Dr. Gülay ALTUN UĞRAŞ, Chair of the Department of Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, along with faculty members Dr. Seher GÜRDİL YILMAZ and Dr. Tuğba ÇAM YANIK, Research Assistant Dr. Canan KANAT, and student representatives from ÖHDER; the sessions addressed citizens’ questions and emphasized the importance of maintaining breast health, regular health checkups, and early diagnosis.
Prof. Dr. Bahar Taşdelen, Director of the Institute of Health Sciences at Mersin University, and Prof. Dr. Duygu Vefikuluçay Yılmaz, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, also visited the event to show their support for the initiative. This visit underscored the university’s commitment to raising awareness and promoting public health.
The results of the evaluation survey conducted after the training revealed that all participants were satisfied with the training and would recommend it to others. This positive feedback once again demonstrated the event’s impact on participants and the importance of efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Mersin University continues to contribute to raising awareness about early detection of breast cancer by carrying out activities aimed at protecting and improving public health within the framework of university-community collaboration.
