A Meaningful Contribution to Breast Cancer Awareness from Mersin University

In collaboration with the Mersin University Faculty of Nursing, the Institute of Health Sciences, and the Student Nurses Association (ÖHDER), an awareness event was held on Saturday, October 24, at the SAYAPARK Shopping Mall to highlight the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer and to increase public awareness.

During the event, members of the public were provided with information regarding breast cancer, its risk factors, methods of prevention, and the significance of early diagnosis. Participants were taught how to perform breast self-examinations using a breast model, helping to raise their awareness of breast health. Additionally, attendees were given pink ribbons—the symbol of breast cancer awareness—to further promote social sensitivity toward the importance of early diagnosis.

The educational sessions—supported by Prof. Dr. Gülay Altun Uğraş, Head of the Department of Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing; faculty members Dr. Seher Gürdil Yılmaz and Dr. Tuğba Çam Yanık; Research Assistant Dr. Canan Kanat; and student representatives from ÖHDER—addressed questions from the public and emphasized the importance of maintaining breast health, undergoing regular health check-ups, and achieving early diagnosis.

The event was also attended by Prof. Dr. Bahar Taşdelen, Director of the Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Duygu Vefikuluçay Yılmaz, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, both of whom showed their support for the initiative. This visit underscored the university’s commitment to raising awareness and improving public health. The results of the post-training evaluation survey revealed that all participants were satisfied with the training provided and would recommend it to others. This positive feedback underscores the impact of the event on the participants and highlights the importance of initiatives aimed at increasing awareness about breast cancer.

Within the framework of university-community collaboration, Mersin University continues its efforts to protect and improve public health, thereby contributing to the promotion of awareness regarding the early diagnosis of breast cancer.
