patent meeting

The Intellectual Property Rights Board of Mersin University convened to evaluate the formal patent application processes for three significant innovative projects developed by researchers within the university.

Chaired by Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hakan Öztürk and coordinated by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), the Mersin University (MEÜ) Intellectual Property Rights Board met on October 14, 2026. During the meeting, held in the conference hall of the Advanced Technology Education, Research, and Application Center (MEİTAM), the formal application procedures to be submitted to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for three distinct inventions developed by university researchers were discussed.

In addition to the Board Chair, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hakan Öztürk, the meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Caner Özdemir, Prof. Dr. Rükan Genç Altürk, Prof. Dr. Seyhan Şahan Fırat, Prof. Dr. Suphan Karaytuğ, Prof. Dr. Nadir Dizge, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuncay Turan Turaboğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Uca, and the Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights Officer, Ramazan Duman.

Wearable Antenna for Health and Sports Technologies

The first project presented at the meeting was an invention titled "Ultra-Wideband Wearable Microstrip Antenna for Wireless Body Area Networks," developed by Prof. Dr. Ali Akdağlı, a faculty member at the MEÜ Faculty of Engineering, and Eray Mert Tekin, a lecturer and Deputy Director of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. Lecturer Eray Mert Tekin stated that the inability to simultaneously achieve wideband performance, compactness, flexibility, and reliable communication in existing antenna structures is a fundamental challenge, noting that the newly developed antenna was designed specifically to address these needs. It was emphasized that this wearable UWB (Ultra-Wideband) antenna—distinguished by its compact, flexible, and lightweight design—offers the potential for safe and comfortable use in applications such as health monitoring systems (tracking heart rate, body temperature, and respiration), sports and activity tracking, smart textiles, and short-range wireless communication.

Eco-Friendly and Domestically Produced Biomaterials

During the remainder of the meeting, two separate biomaterial studies were presented to the board members: "Biomaterial Containing Urease Immobilized on Polyethyleneimine-Modified Cellulose Nanocrystals" and "Biomaterial Containing Urease Immobilized on Cellulose Nanocrystals Modified with 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane." These studies were developed by Prof. Dr. Serap Yalın (Faculty of Pharmacy, Mersin University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Alptekin (Faculty of Pharmacy, Çukurova University), and Specialist Pharmacist Elif Toku.

These inventions involve an innovative biomaterial and a method for the immobilization of the enzyme urease onto cellulose nanocrystals that have been chemically modified at the surface. These inventions, which have a wide range of potential applications... Its key advantages include superior performance compared to existing techniques, suitability for industrial-scale production, an eco-friendly nature due to its biodegradability, and the potential for domestic, national production.
