The Patent Journey for New Inventions Has Begun at Our University

Our University's Intellectual Property Rights Board met on Thursday, June 11th, under the chairmanship of our Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hakan Öztürk. The meeting, coordinated by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), evaluated the official application processes to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for two important innovative projects developed by researchers within our University.

The board, which convened in the Advanced Technology Education Research and Application Center (MEİTAM) Meeting Hall, included Prof. Dr. Caner Özdemir, Prof. Dr. Suphan Karaytuğ, Prof. Dr. Nadir Dizge, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tuncay Turan Turaboğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fahri Özsungur, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Uca, and the Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights Officer, Ramazan Duman.

Next-Generation Antenna Design for UAVs and 6G Technologies

The first project discussed at the meeting was the UAV Communication project developed by Prof. Dr. Caner Özdemir and Research Assistant Nurcihan Günsür from the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering; The design of a high-gain directional three-band microstrip patch antenna for ISM Radar and 6G applications was discussed.

This invention, which overcomes the limitations of classic microstrip antennas through the hybrid use of parasitic elements and special slot structures, offers technical advantages such as multi-frequency band support, high bandwidth, directivity, compact design, and low cost. The new generation antenna is expected to find wide application in telecommunications, radar systems, and R&D institutions, primarily in the defense and security sectors.

Production of Ultra-High Polyphenol Functional Oil from Olive Leaves

Another innovative study evaluated by the board was a food and health technology-focused project prepared by Prof. Dr. Nadir Dizge, a faculty member of the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, and researchers Prof. Dr. Bülent Keskinler, Selçuk Fatih Şentürk, and Gülay Şentürk.

The invention, titled "Method for the Production of an Ultra-High Polyphenol Functional Lipid System by Selective Extraction of Olive Leaf-Derived Polyphenols with Supercritical CO₂ Support and Loading into a Refined Olive Oil Matrix," aims to eliminate chronic problems in conventional production such as solvent residue, oxidative degradation, and low functionality.

Functional Product with 36 Times the EFSA Threshold

Thanks to the developed method, impurities such as beeswax are effectively removed while preserving the biological activity of polyphenols. The invention, which provides concentration at low temperatures using a thin-film evaporation system, transforms refined olive oil into a high-value-added product up to 36 times the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) threshold. This innovative system is stated to have high commercial potential in the food, nutraceutical (food supplement), cosmetic, and medical nutrition sectors.
