Hidden Inhabitants of the North Sea: Mersin University and Senckenberg Institute Joint Scientific Discovery Featured in German Press
The North Sea, one of the most intensively studied marine regions in the world, has been the scene of a surprising discovery in the field of marine biology. An international research team, including Mersin University Lecturer Dr. Seher Kuru Kara, Prof. Dr. Pedro Martinez Arbizu, Head of Department at the Senckenberg Institute for Marine Research in Germany, and Dr. Sven Rossel, illuminated the hidden world of microscopic marine organisms using genetic methods.
A Biological Revolution Brought About by DNA Barcoding
These "hidden" species, smaller than 1 millimeter in length and forming the basis of the marine ecosystem, are so similar in appearance that they are indistinguishable from each other. Where classical methods proved insufficient, the research team utilized high-resolution microscopes and DNA barcoding technology, making a significant contribution to the scientific world. It was proven that these microscopic organisms, previously thought to be a single species, are actually five completely different species. As a result of these meticulous genetic analyses, 5 new species of marine life have been added to the scientific world.
The Most Important Discovery of the "Unknown Germany" Initiative
This joint study by Mersin University and the Senckenberg Institute has received extensive coverage in the German press. This is because the North Sea is considered one of the best-studied marine areas in the world, but the discovery of 5 completely new species "on their doorstep" (vor unserer Haustür) in a region where everything was thought to be known was a great surprise for the scientific community. Based on the fact that a large part of Germany's existing biodiversity is still unknown, eight German research institutions established the "Unbekanntes Deutschland" (Unknown Germany) initiative to fill this knowledge gap.
